Harvard Gate Erected Since 1889 Finally Goes to See Doctor

This gate needs medical attention.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – Harvard’s Johnston Gate, which was erected in 1889 and is still erect all these years later, finally went to see a doctor.

Dr. Kevin L. Bradley, Johnston’s primary physician, could not believe how long the gate had been erect. “Usually, if a gate is erect for 40 years or more we recommend it goes to see a doctor right away, especially when it’s not wood,” he said.

Harvard personnel became concerned about the gate’s health when they noticed more and more white substance appearing on the bricks of the gate. “Yeah, when a gate’s been up that long, it’s normal for the mortar to show more,” confirmed the Harvard Yard Operations Director.

News of Johnston Gate's poor health rocked the world of many Harvard affiliates. President Drew Faust, who walks through the gate every day to get to her office, said, “I was always surprised by the stamina of that gate. I mean, I used that gate every day for years. In and out, in and out, in and out, and still, it managed to keep standing.”

Not everyone shared Faust’s admiration. Some students said they feel uncomfortable walking through the gate because its impressive arch size made them insecure. “The Baker Gate is only 8 feet tall, so it’s pretty easy for me to handle," said Alyssia R. Gonei ’21. "But the Johnston gate is 15 feet tall and 5 people wide! That’s a lot to work with."
